Family Game Day

Bring the whole family to the library to learn some family friendly games. Two games will be featured at this event – “Ticket to Ride” and “A Game of Cat & Mouth”. Snacks will be provided.

Questions about Emmett Till? Here are the answers.Thursday, November 18 at 7 PM

The story of Emmett Till was silenced for over 50 years after his brutal murder on August 28, 1955.

Since 2005, new information has been discovered about what really took place after Emmett made the famous whistle to Caroline Bryant after purchasing candy at Bryant’s Grocery in Money, Mississippi.

Presenter Jim Herm will share his research into the post Civil War South, the legacy of Emmett Till, and the start of the Civil Rights movement. Jim Herm is a resident of Otsego and a retired Portage Public School history teacher. He has visited many of the recently opened historical sites that will be discussed in his presentation

Overstock Book Sale

Overstock Sales – October 4, November 1, and December 6

Who doesn’t like book bargains?!

The Friends of the Library are holding an Overstock Book Sale on the first Monday of each month during library hours. Books will be on sale for 3/$1 in front of the bookstore. (We might even have some special deals that day!) Grab your book bags and stock up for birthdays, holidays, and your own bookshelf!

Shelves inside the bookstore will be restocked with new titles after each sale.

Allegan Brass Collective – Concert

Come enjoy this holiday concert and listen to the sounds of lively, toe-tapping seasonal music with this brass quintet.

The Allegan Brass Collective is a traditional brass quintet that loves to play both classical and non-traditional music.

The musicians live and work in Allegan County and strive to bring the community together through their love of music.

Now Accepting Parking Lot Snow Plowing, Salting, and Shoveling Bids

The Otsego District Library is now accepting bids for plowing the entire library parking lot and salting the lot upon request. Plowing is requested for when there are 3 inches of snow or more. Please note price for plowing and salting separately in bid.

When needed, plowing must be done before library opens (9 AM Mon-Sat).

Also accepting bids for sidewalk shoveling: Shovel back staff walkway and areas in the front not plowed out by our snowplows (sidewalks out to the lot and front entry area). Spread salt on sidewalks when icy. Please submit a bid per time. This would be done on an as-needed basis and only upon request by the library.

Michigan Activity Pass (MAP)

Discover Michigan’s premier cultural & natural attractions using your library card!

The Michigan Activity Pass [MAP] presented by The Library Network program is a partnership between Michigan’s nearly 400 public libraries and hundreds of Michigan’s state parks (formerly the Park & Read program), historic sites, cultural attractions, campgrounds and recreation areas. The program is designed to enhance the learning experience for people of all ages through books and other library materials, and to provide reduced cost or complimentary access to arts, cultural, and outdoor organizations across the state of Michigan, from St. Joseph to Saline to Saginaw to Sault Ste. Marie to South Range, and all points in between.

Some partners offer complimentary or reduced price admission; others, discounts in their gift shop or other exclusive offers for MAP pass holders only. Each Michigan Activity Pass expires one week after a pass is created.

MOBILE PASSES NOW AVAILABLE! We encourage you to use a mobile pass vs. printed pass, to abide by any restrictions our MAP partner destinations have in place, and to always check the partner destination’s website/social media pages for the latest hours/information before visiting.

Michigan Activity Pass is presented by The Library Network and supported in part by the Library of Michigan with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Otsego District Library serves 14,230 residents with a budget of $518,000 and a staff of fifteen. In 2009, a beautiful new 18,000 square foot, LEED-Silver Level building opened for service to the community. A dedicated library millage voted in perpetuity provides 75% of the library’s operating revenue. The library has a staff known for its commitment to outstanding customer service and a supportive board that is responsive to the community. Otsego is located in beautiful southwest Michigan, fifteen miles north of Kalamazoo, thirty miles south of Grand Rapids, and only forty minutes from Lake Michigan. The Otsego area offers affordable living, excellent schools, convenient shopping, and an outstanding quality of life.

Introducing VOX ™ Books, now available at the Otsego District Public Library. VOX ™Books enable children to listen to an audio recording directly from a printed book – no computer, no tablet, no phone.  The books have an audio reader attached to the front cover of the book,  controlled by a push button, which allows your child to listen and read along.  VOX ™readers are a simple yet powerful literacy tool that children love.  Just push a button and listen!

VOX ™ Books combine outstanding picture books and non-fiction with audio recordings that capture children’s attention and make learning and literacy development fun. Studies have shown that VOX ™Books users improve their reading comprehension by 75% and improve their reading accuracy by over 50%.
