Scholastic Book Fair

Back by popular demand, the Scholastic Book Fair returns June 6 – 28 during all library open hours.

Let your children and grandchildren pick out some fun reading materials for summer to celebrate their accomplishments in school this past year! Books also make great birthday gifts.

Thanks to all of the wonderful community support, the Scholastic Book Fair raised $1600 in free books for the library last summer!

The library earns 50% of the profits to use toward free books.

The Beatles

Presented by Beatles Scholar Aaron Krerowicz
Thursday, June 14 at 7 pm

Explore the music of the Beatles in this multimedia presentation (part history and part musical analysis) spanning their breakthrough in the 1960’s to their break-up in 1970 including Beatlemania.

The program will include music clips and excerpts from interviews with the band. Aaron has authored six Beatles books and produces videos about the Beatles.

Babysitting Clinic

Topics will include: Health related topics like CPR, choking, and First Aid; how to get kids to sleep; creating a safe environment; discipline; baby care; snack choices; handling conflict; and  building a resume/marketing yourself. Cost is $30 and payment is due when registering. Please bring a sack lunch.

Children’s Summer Reading Program
June 16 – July 28

The library will be rockin’ this summer! The party starts on Saturday, June 16 with our kickoff event featuring the Kalamazoo Symphony performing “Peter and the Wolf” and continues through Thursday, July 26, where we will rock out with “Miss Paula and the Candy Bandits” at our finalé celebration. Register at the library by Saturday, July 7. It’s super easy! Set your own reading goal (read between 20-40 days) and keep track on your reading log. Win fun prizes, play musical games, and rock out at awesome programs when you visit the library! Turn in your finished reading log by Saturday, July 28 for a chance to win one of our grand prizes PLUS receive a finisher bag filled with prizes and certificates for FREE items. The library’s goal is that kids will be reading and rockin’ all summer long!

ROCKIN’ GRAND PRIZES
This year children will be able to pick which one of six grand prizes they hope to win.

  1. FOUR Tickets to “School of Rock” – Donated by the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre
  2. FOUR Tickets to “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” at the Kalamazoo Symphony

LIBRARIES ROCK!

Teen & Tween Summer Reading Program
Saturday, June 16 – Saturday, July 28

Get ready to ROCK OUT at the library…. yeah… you read that correctly! This summer is packed with exciting music themed crafts, games, events, prizes, and READING! For the FIRST time ever, the Otsego District Library will be offering Grand Prizes specifically for the Teens and Tweens! Each book read will earn you a treat from the Vox Box! Be sure to have a library staff member initial your Ticket Stub Reading Log when you earn your prize. Read at least 10 BOOKS during the Summer Reading Program to qualify for the TEEN & TWEEN GRAND PRIZE DRAWING! The Teen Room will feature a Weekly Trivia Question. Answer the questions for a chance to win awesome prizes. Attend CrafTEEN events on Tuesdays and Backstage Pass events on Thursdays. For every teen/tween event attended, earn ONE additional slip for the weekly drawing in the teen room. Be sure to sign up for Ukulele and Painting classes as they will fill up fast.

Pizza & Pages: Teen/Tween Book Club

Come for the pizza, stay for the fun! Join us each month to discuss what you’re reading. Pizza and refreshments will be provided. June and July meetings feature special guests!

KFG is: a nationally-touring, award-winning spoken word poet, a two-time member of the National Poetry Slam Team out of Grand Rapids, a youth teaching artist, a mental health advocate, a nonbinary Pisces empath, and a sucker for good ice cream.

 

RL Stoll
July 31
As a Young Adult author, RL Stoll’s goal is to rouse book lovers everywhere to WRITE. She believes writing is advantageous and therapeutic for all ages. Whether it’s penning fiction or journaling your thoughts, great things WILL flourish! This is why Stoll chooses to write, teach, inspire, and challenge audiences everywhere. Stoll would like to ecourage all generations to write with conviction, heart, and soul!

Ukulele Classes

Ukulele Classes with Josh Holcomb
June 19 & 26 or July 3 & 10 at 2 PM
Kindergarten – 5th Grade
Calling all musical kids! Sign up for one of the two class options listed above. Explore songs on the ukulele and learn helpful tips from a professional musician. Each two week session will teach a new song and skills to learn songs on your own. Josh works as a violin and viola instructor at the Suzuki Academy Kalamazoo.

Ukuleles are being provided by Meyer Music of Kalamazoo.

 

Teens & Tweens

Ukulele Classes with Josh Holcomb
June 19 – July 10
Tuesdays at 1 PM
Middle School & High School
Sign up and learn to play the Ukulele in this four-week session. The class is FREE to attend but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

Ukuleles will be provided by Meyer Music of Kalamazoo during the class, but feel free to bring your own.

Read Down Your Fines

LIBRARIES ROCK!
We want to see you again at the library!

If your fines are holding you back, come in and “read down your fines” this summer! Check in at the desk both as you come and go to tell the circulation staff you would like to participate in Read Down Your Fines. The staff will waive $1 of fines for every 15 minutes you read. Patrons of all ages can participate. You must read in the library… find a cool spot and read away your fines!

This offer does not apply to lost materials or collection fees and cannot be used to build up a credit against future fines. Up to a maximum of $15 will be waived per library card.

This is a special event in conjunction with LIBRARIES ROCK and is only being offered June 16 – July 28.

Lyrics on the Lawn – FREE Concert Series!

Thank you to the Friends of the Library for sponsoring a portion of our concerts this year! FREE popcorn will be served and cold bottled water will be available for $1. We are excited to offer an extended season of six fantastic concerts this summer to celebrate the summer reading program theme, LIBRARIES ROCK!

Special KIDS’ Concert – Miss Paula and the Candy Bandits
July 26

Rock out with Miss Paula and the Candy Bandits to celebrate the Summer Reading Program finale’ in this special kid’s concert! Paula Messner and her band perform upbeat, rockin’ jams that people of all ages will enjoy! Everyone is welcome to attend.

 

 

The Crane Wives
August 2

The Crane Wives are an award-winning, home grown local indie/folk/Americana band that defies musical stereotypes. You won’t want to miss their performance! They utilize three-part vocal harmonies, eclectic instrumentation, and a passion for song-craft to create organic music that is both accessible and innovative.

 

 

Mid-Lakes Chorus “Sweet Adelines”
August 9

The Mid-Lakes Chorus is a membership organization of female singers who meet regularly to practice, perform, socialize, and have fun. They currently have about 20 singers of all ages, all walks of life, and are from all parts of southwest Michigan.

 

 

Brenda Loomis Band
August 16

An original country music Nashville recording artist, Brenda Loomis won first place in Milwaukee’s America’s Got Talent video contest. This stop is part of Brenda’s “Here for the Party” summer tour!

 

 

Main Street Dueling Pianos
August 23

Joe Laureano has been performing rock & roll professionally his entire adult life. He is well known all across the country and has an impressive repertoire of 1,000+ songs, spanning more than seven decades of music.

 

 

B-Side Growlers
August 30

Acoustic trio Pete and Mary Lewandowski and Matt Porter feature music that is “tradition inspired, toe-tappin’ fired, vintage acoustic blues, jazz and country.”
