Allegan County and the Great War

October 16, 2018 | See all Announcements

Presented by Scott Kuykendall of the Allegan Historical Society
Thursday, November 1 at 7 PM

What was life like in Allegan County over 100 years ago during World War I? Hear about local Allegan County men who left the farm and fought in several areas of Europe during World War I, and what the citizens of Allegan County faced here at home as well. Allegan County artifacts from the Great War era will also be on display. Scott Kuykendall’s last program at the library, “The Scandalous History of Allegan County,” was a huge hit and we look forward to this program to help celebrate the 100th Anniversary of WWI.

An American Red Cross Girl’s War in Vietnam Presented by Joann Puffer Kotcher
Thursday, October 4 at 7 PM

Joann Puffer Kotcher, one of the first women allowed in a combat zone, will discuss the riveting story of her service as an American Red Cross Donut Dolly. These brave young women set up recreation centers and brought books, snacks and a welcome reminder of home to soldiers in the field.

Kotcher and other Donut Dollies, while participating in highly dangerous missions, were assigned to combat support duty and often found themselves in fox holes nose to nose with the enemy. She spent a year in Vietnam during the height of the war and was awarded the Civilian Service Citation for merit and bravery upon her return.

Donuts will be provided for attendees by Sweetwater’s Donut Mill in Plainwell.
